A Refuge
Share
I was born and raised in Lawton, Oklahoma. When I graduated high school, I left for college and never expected to move back to Lawton. After living overseas for several years, I found myself moving back to the States. I wasn't sure where I was going to live in the States, but I ended up coming back to Lawton to be near family.
Lawton has its challenges, just like most other communities, but it also has potential. Some people don't see it, but it's there for those who are willing to look. Instead of complaining about the negative, I want to highlight the good. I want to do my tiny part of building better in and for my community. One way you and I can each do that is share the favorite parts of our city...whether that is the people around us, the best spots to relax, or great local businesses.
This week, I'm highlighting one of my favorite spots in the area - the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located just outside the Lawton/Ft. Sill area. Wildlife such as elk, longhorn, and bison roam approximately 60,000 acres. Part of the refuge is open for the public to enjoy. You can drive through the refuge, walk up the Mount Scott roadway, hike many trails, view wildlife, kayak, camp, and explore the great outdoors. There's something for everyone to enjoy!
There are times when I drive through the refuge, find a quiet spot to sit, and just take in the beauty of creation around me. There are other times when I kayak or hike. Whatever activity I choose that day, it's a place that reminds me that God is my refuge. It's a place where my soul and mind are quieted. I can rest, relax, and breathe. It's a call back to the simple things of life.
Look up, look around, and see the beauty of your community.
